The Structure of Rapidly Rotating Late-Type Spiral Galaxies. I. Photometry, H I, and Optical Kinematics
We present I-band photometry, long-slit optical spectroscopy, and newaperture synthesis H I observations for eight late-type spiral galaxieswith rotation velocities in the range 243 kms-1<~Vrot<~308 km s-1. The samplewill be used to study the structure and angular momentum of disks at thehigh-mass end of the spiral galaxy population; here we discuss the basicproperties of these ``fast rotators'' and derive hybrid optical/H Irotation curves for each. Despite the presence of H I warps and low-masscompanions in many systems, their kinematics are regular and there isexcellent agreement between optical and H I tracers near the opticalradius ropt. At high inclinations at which projection effectsare negligible, the sample galaxies exhibit flat, featureless rotationcurves out to their last measured points at1.7ropt-3.5ropt. The intermediate-inclinationsystems are also consistent with a constant rotation amplitude forr>~0.5ropt. We therefore find no evidence for decliningrotation curves at the high-mass end of the late-type spiral galaxypopulation. Combining our data with the compilation of spiral galaxieswith reliable outer H I kinematics from the work of Casertano and vanGorkom, we find no convincing trends between logarithmic outer rotationcurve slopes and rotation amplitudes or surface brightnesses forgalaxies with Vrot>~220 km s-1. Correlationsbetween these slopes and morphological types or disk scale lengths arealso marginal in this regime.

M/L, Hα Rotation Curves, and H I Measurements for 329 Nearby Cluster and Field Spirals. I. Data
A survey of 329 nearby galaxies (redshift z<0.045) has been conductedto study the distribution of mass and light within spiral galaxies overa range of environments. The 18 observed clusters and groups span arange of richness, density, and X-ray temperature and are supplementedby a set of 30 isolated field galaxies. Optical spectroscopy taken withthe 200 inch (5 m) Hale Telescope provides separately resolved Hαand [N II] major-axis rotation curves for the complete set of galaxies,which are analyzed to yield velocity widths and profile shapes, extents,and gradients. H I line profiles provide an independent velocity widthmeasurement and a measure of H I gas mass and distribution. I-bandimages are used to deconvolve profiles into disk and bulge components,to determine global luminosities and ellipticities, and to checkmorphological classification. These data are combined to form a unifieddata set ideal for the study of the effects of environment upon galaxyevolution.

1.65-μm (H -band) surface photometry of galaxies - VIII. The near-IR κ space at z =0
We present the distribution of a statistical sample of nearby galaxiesin the κ -space (κ 1 ~logM , κ 2~logI e 3 M /L , κ 3 ~logM /L ).Our study is based on near-IR (H -band: λ =1.65μm)observations, for the first time comprising early- and late-typesystems. Our data confirm that the mean effective dynamicalmass-to-light ratio M /L of the E+S0+S0a galaxies increases withincreasing effective dynamical mass M , as expected from the existenceof the Fundamental Plane relation. Conversely, spiral and Im/BCDgalaxies show a broad distribution in M /L with no detected trend of M/L with M , the former galaxies having M /L values about twice largerthan the latter, on average. For all the late-type galaxies, the M /Lincreases with decreasing effective surface intensity I e ,consistent with the existence of the Tully-Fisher relation. Theseresults are discussed on the basis of the assumptions behind theconstruction of the κ -space and their limitations. Our study iscomplementary to a previous investigation in the optical (B -band:λ =0.44μm) and allows us to study wavelength dependences ofthe galaxy distribution in the κ -space. As a first result, wefind that the galaxy distribution in the κ 1 -κ2 plane reproduces the transition from bulgeless tobulge-dominated systems in galaxies of increasing dynamical mass.Conversely, it appears that the M /L of late-types is higher (lower)than that of early-types with the same M in the near-IR (optical). Theorigins of this behaviour are discussed in terms of dust attenuation andstar formation history.

Photometric parameters of edge-on galaxies from 2MASS observations
To analyze the vertical structure of edge-on galaxies, we have usedimages of a large uniform sample of flat galaxies that have been takenduring the 2MASS all-sky survey. The photometric parameters, such as theradial scale length, the vertical scale height, and the deprojectedcentral surface brightness of galactic disks have been obtained. We finda strong correlation between the central surface brightness and theratio of the vertical scale height to the vertical scale length: thethinner the galaxy, the lower the central surface brightness of itsdisk. The vertical scale height does not increase systematically withthe distance from the galaxy center in the frames of this sample.

A list of peculiar velocities of RFGC galaxies
A list of radial velocities, HI line widths and peculiar velocities of1327 galaxies from the RFGC catalogue has been compiled using actualobservations and literature data. The list can be used for studying bulkmotions of galaxies, construction of the field of peculiar velocitiesand other tasks.

Distances to Galaxies from the Correlation between Luminosities and Line Widths. III. Cluster Template and Global Measurement of H0
The correlation between the luminosities and rotation velocities ofgalaxies can be used to estimate distances to late-type galaxies. It isan appropriate moment to reevaluate this method given the great deal ofnew information available. The major improvements described hereinclude: (1) the template relations can now be defined by large,complete samples, (2) the samples are drawn from a wide range ofenvironments, (3) the relations are defined by photometric informationat the B, R, I, and K' bands, (4) the multiband information clarifiesproblems associated with internal reddening, (5) the template zeropoints are defined by 24 galaxies with accurately known distances, and(6) the relations are applied to 12 clusters scattered across the skyand out to velocities of 8000 km s-1. The biggest change fromearlier calibrations are associated with point 5. Roughly a 15% increasein the distance scale has come about with the fivefold increase in thenumber of zero-point calibrators. The overall increase in the distancescale from the luminosity-line width methodology is about 10% afterconsideration of all factors. Modulo an assumed distance to the LargeMagellanic Cloud of 50 kpc and no metallicity corrections to the Cepheidcalibration, the resulting value of the Hubble constant isH0=77+/-8 km s-1 Mpc-1, where the erroris the 95% probable statistical error. Cumulative systematic errorsinternal to this analysis should not exceed 10%. Uncertainties in thedistance scale ladder external to this analysis are estimated at ~10%.If the Cepheid calibration is shifted from the LMC to NGC 4258 with adistance established by observations of circumnuclear masers, thenH0 is larger by 12%.

1.65 μm (H-band) surface photometry of galaxies. V. Profile decomposition of 1157 galaxies
We present near-infrared H-band (1.65 μm) surface brightness profiledecomposition for 1157 galaxies in five nearby clusters of galaxies:Coma, A1367, Virgo, A262 and Cancer, and in the bridge between Coma andA1367 in the ``Great Wall". The optically selected (mpg≤16.0) sample is representative of all Hubble types, from E to Irr+BCD,except dE and of significantly different environments, spanning fromisolated regions to rich clusters of galaxies. We model the surfacebrightness profiles with a de Vaucouleurs r1/4 law (dV), withan exponential disk law (E), or with a combination of the two (B+D).From the fitted quantities we derive the H band effective surfacebrightness (μe) and radius (re) of each component, theasymptotic magnitude HT and the light concentration indexC31. We find that: i) Less than 50% of the Ellipticalgalaxies have pure dV profiles. The majority of E to Sb galaxies is bestrepresented by a B+D profile. All Scd to BCD galaxies have pureexponential profiles. ii) The type of decomposition is a strong functionof the total H band luminosity (mass), independent of the Hubbleclassification: the fraction of pure exponential decompositionsdecreases with increasing luminosity, that of B+D increases withluminosity. Pure dV profiles are absent in the low luminosity rangeLH<1010 L\odot and become dominantabove 1011 L\odot . The Revised Flat Galaxy Catalogue.
We present a new improved and completed version of the Flat GalaxyCatalogue (FGC) named the Revised Flat Galaxy Catalogue (RFGC)containing 4236 thin edge-on spiral galaxies and covering the whole sky.The Catalogue is intended to study large-scale cosmic streamings as wellas other problems of observational cosmology. The dipole moment ofdistribution of the RFGC galaxies (l = 273 degr; b =+19 degr) lieswithin statistical errors (+/-10 degr) in the direction of the LocalGroup motion towards the Microwave Background Radiation (MBR).

Arcsecond Positions of UGC Galaxies
We present accurate B1950 and J2000 positions for all confirmed galaxiesin the Uppsala General Catalog (UGC). The positions were measuredvisually from Digitized Sky Survey images with rms uncertaintiesσ<=[(1.2")2+(θ/100)2]1/2,where θ is the major-axis diameter. We compared each galaxymeasured with the original UGC description to ensure high reliability.The full position list is available in the electronic version only.

The I-Band Tully-Fisher Relation for SC Galaxies: Optical Imaging Data
Properties derived from the analysis of photometric I-band imagingobservations are presented for 1727 inclined spiral galaxies, mostly oftypes Sbc and Sc. The reduction, parameter extraction, and errorestimation procedures are discussed in detail. The asymptotic behaviorof the magnitude curve of growth and the radial variation in ellipticityand position angle are used in combination with the linearity of thesurface brightness falloff to fit the disk portion of the profile. TotalI-band magnitudes are calculated by extrapolating the detected surfacebrightness profile to a radius of eight disk scale lengths. Errors inthe magnitudes, typically ~0.04 mag, are dominated by uncertainties inthe sky subtraction and disk-fitting procedures. Comparison is made withthe similar imaging database of Mathewson, Ford, & Buchhorn, both aspresented originally by those authors and after reanalyzing theirdigital reduction files using identical disk-fitting procedures. Directcomparison is made of profile details for 292 galaxies observed incommon. Although some differences occur, good agreement is found,proving that the two data sets can be used in combination with onlyminor accommodation of those differences. The compilation of opticalproperties presented here is optimized for use in applications of theTully-Fisher relation as a secondary distance indicator in studies ofthe local peculiar velocity field.

Galaxy coordinates. II. Accurate equatorial coordinates for 17298 galaxies
Using images of the Digitized Sky Survey we measured coodinates for17298 galaxies having poorly defined coordinates. As a control, wemeasured with the same method 1522 galaxies having accurate coordinates.The comparison with our own measurements shows that the accuracy of themethod is about 6 arcsec on each axis (RA and DEC).

On the local radio luminosity function of galaxies. II. Environmental dependences among late-type galaxies
Using new extensive radio continuum surveys at 1.4 GHz (FIRST and NVSS),we derive the distribution of the radio/optical and radio/NIR luminosity(RLF) of late-type (Sa-Irr) galaxies (m_p<15.7) in 5 nearby clustersof galaxies: A262, Cancer, A1367, Coma and Virgo. With the aim ofdiscussing possible environmental dependences of the radio properties,we compare these results with those obtained for relatively isolatedobjects in the Coma supercluster. We find that the RLF of Cancer, A262and Virgo are consistent with that of isolated galaxies. Conversely weconfirm earlier claims that galaxies in A1367 and Coma have their radioemissivity enhanced by a factor ~ 5 with respect to isolated objects. Wediscuss this result in the framework of the dynamical pressure sufferedby galaxies in motion through the intra-cluster gas (ram-pressure). Wefind that the radio excess is statistically larger for galaxies in fasttransit motion. This is coherent with the idea that enhanced radiocontinuum activity is associated with magnetic field compression. TheX-ray luminosities and temperatures of Coma and A1367 imply that thesetwo clusters have significantly larger intracluster gas density than theremaining three studied ones, providing a clue for explaining the higherradio continuum luminosities of their galaxies. Multiple systems in theComa supercluster bridge (with projected separations smaller than 300kpc) have radio luminosities significantly larger than isolatedgalaxies. Starburst Galaxies. III. Properties of a Radio-selected Sample
We have analyzed the properties of the 20 most radio-luminous UGCstarburst galaxies from Condon, Frayer, & Broderick. Near-infraredimages, spectra, and optical rotation curves were presented in Smith etal. In this paper, we use these data and published radio data to assessthe stellar populations, dust contents, ionizing conditions, anddynamics of the starbursts. Certain properties of the star formationoccurring in these galaxies differ from those observed locally. Theinfrared excesses (IREs) are lower than and span a narrower range ofvalues than those of Galactic H II regions. The starbursts appear toproduce a higher proportion of ionizing photons than most Galactic H IIregions. Consequently, the initial mass functions (IMFs) of thestarbursts may be more strongly biased toward high-mass star formation.The starbursts may also contain fewer old H II regions than the MilkyWay. Furthermore, the starburst IRE is likely to be influenced by thepresence of large reservoirs of gas that absorb a larger fraction of theLyman continuum photons. The OB stellar and far-infrared luminositiesimply that the upper mass range of the starburst IMF (M > 10 Mȯ)is characterized by a slope of 2.7 +/- 0.2. The starburst IMF thus bearsa strong similarity to that observed in Magellanic OB associations.Optical line ratios indicate that a range of excitation conditions arepresent. We conclude that the near-infrared light from many of thestarbursts is dominated by a heavily obscured mixture of emission fromevolved red stars and young blue stars with small contributions (~5%)from thermal gas and hot dust, under the assumptions that a Galactic orSMC extinction law can be applied to these systems and that the truereddening curve follows one of the models currently existing in theliterature. In some cases, larger amounts of emission from blue stars orhot dust may be required to explain the observed near-infrared colors.The amount of dust emission exceeds that predicted from comparisons withGalactic H II regions. The near-infrared colors of some of the systemsmay also be influenced by the presence of a low-luminosity activegalactic nucleus (AGN). Emission from blue stars and hot dust, ifpresent, dilutes the observed CO index. The activity in the redder, moreluminous systems is strongly peaked. The galaxies hosting the starburstsexhibit a wide range of morphological and star-forming properties. Whileall of the host galaxies are interacting systems, the nuclearseparations of the interacting nuclei range from <1 kpc to >1 Mpc.The dynamical behavior ranges from relaxed to strongly perturbed. Theoff-nuclear regions of the galaxies are sites of active star formationand are characterized by a range of excitation conditions. Spatiallyextended LINER emission is consistent with shock excitation produced bysuperwinds or galaxy-galaxy collisions. Violent star formation activityoccurs over a larger physical scale in the most active starbursts.Systems containing mergers and widely separated nuclei possess similarcolors and luminosities. The burst properties are most likely regulatedby the internal structures of the interacting galaxies and not theseparations of the interacting galaxies.

Total magnitude, radius, colour indices, colour gradients and photometric type of galaxies
We present a catalogue of aperture photometry of galaxies, in UBVRI,assembled from three different origins: (i) an update of the catalogueof Buta et al. (1995) (ii) published photometric profiles and (iii)aperture photometry performed on CCD images. We explored different setsof growth curves to fit these data: (i) The Sersic law, (ii) The net ofgrowth curves used for the preparation of the RC3 and (iii) A linearinterpolation between the de Vaucouleurs (r(1/4) ) and exponential laws.Finally we adopted the latter solution. Fitting these growth curves, wederive (1) the total magnitude, (2) the effective radius, (3) the colourindices and (4) gradients and (5) the photometric type of 5169 galaxies.The photometric type is defined to statistically match the revisedmorphologic type and parametrizes the shape of the growth curve. It iscoded from -9, for very concentrated galaxies, to +10, for diffusegalaxies. Based in part on observations collected at the Haute-ProvenceObservatory.

Spectroscopy of Edge-On Spirals
We present HI line observations of \Ntot edge-on spiral galaxies,extracted from the Flat Galaxy Catalog of Karachentsev \etal (1993).Fluxes, systemic velocities and line widths are given for \Ndet detectedgalaxies, as well as search parameters for \Nnod undetected systems.Widths are corrected for instrumental broadening, smoothing,signal-to-noise and profile shape, and an estimate of the error on thewidth is given. When corrected for turbulent broadening and inclinationangle of the disks, the velocity widths presented here can provide theappropriate line width parameter needed to derive distances via theTully-Fisher relation.

Tests of the Tully-Fisher Relation.II.Scatter Using Optical Rotation Curves
We investigate the amount of scatter in the Tully-Fisher relation (TFR)when using optical long-slit \ha\ rotation curves to determine thevelocity widths of spiral galaxies. We study a sample of 25 galaxies inthe Coma region of the sky which were shown in Bernstein et al.\markcite{B1} (1994) to exhibit an extraordinarily low scatter of 0.10mag RMS in the I magnitude vs 21-cm width TFR. Using the same Imagnitudes with new widths derived from high-quality \ha\ rotationcurves, we measure an RMS scatter of 0.14 mag in the TFR. This suggeststhat measurement errors and ``astrophysical errors'' (such asnon-circular gas motion) on the \ha\ velocity widths are below 6%, andoptical widths are nearly as good for TFR studies as 21-cm widths. Thescatter and form of the TFR are found to be robust under choice ofvelocity width-extraction algorithm, as long as the central portions ofthe optical rotation curve are ignored and low-S/N points are notweighted too heavily. In this small sample there is no evidence thatrotation curve shapes vary systematically with rotation velocity, northat rotation curve shape can be used to reduce the scatter in the TFR.

21 CM H1 Line Spectra of Galaxies in Nearby Clusters
A compilation of HI line fluxes, systemic velocities and line widths ispresented for \Ndet detected galaxies, mostly in the vicinities of 30nearby rich clusters out to a redshift of z ~ .04, specifically for usein applications of the Tully-Fisher distance method. New 21 cm HI lineprofiles have been obtained for ~ 500 galaxies in 27 Abell clustersvisible from Arecibo. Upper limits are also presented for \Nnod galaxiesfor which HI emission was not detected. In order to provide ahomogeneous line width determination optimized for Tully-Fisher studies,these new data are supplemented by the reanalysis of previouslypublished spectra obtained both at Arecibo and Green Bank that areavailable in a digital archive. Corrections for instrumental broadening,smoothing, signal-to-noise and profile shape are applied, and anestimate of the error on the width is given. When corrected forturbulent broadening and viewing angle, the corrected velocity widthspresented here will provide the appropriate line width parameter neededto derive distances via the Tully-Fisher relation.

The I band Tully-Fisher relation for cluster galaxies: data presentation.
Observational parameters which can be used for redshift-independentdistance determination using the Tully-Fisher (TF) technique are givenfor \ntot spiral galaxies in the fields of 24 clusters or groups. I bandphotometry for the full sample was either obtained by us or compiledfrom published literature. Rotational velocities are derived either from21 cm spectra or optical emission line long-slit spectra, and convertedto a homogeneous scale. In addition to presenting the data, a discussionof the various sources of error on TF parameters is introduced, and thecriteria for the assignment of membership to each cluster are given.

Starburst Galaxies. II. Imaging and Spectroscopy of a Radio-selected Sample
We present J-, H-, and K-band images and low-resolution K-band spectraof the 20 most luminous starburst galaxies from the survey of Condon,Frayer, & Broderick. Optical rotation curves are also shown for 10of these galaxies. Near-infrared colors, optical depths, CO indices, anddynamical masses are calculated. The near-infrared colors of thestarburst nuclei are significantly redder than those observed in"normal" galaxies. Together, the Brγ and radio fluxes availablefor five of the galaxies imply that the starbursts are heavily obscured;an average extinction of A_V_~ 25 is derived. Strong CO absorptionfeatures indicate that late-type evolved stars are present in many ofthe starbursts. The average dynamical mass of the starburst region isfound to be (1.0 +/- 0.4) x 10^9^ M_sun_.

Peculiar Velocities for Galaxies in the Great Wall.II.Analysis
We analyze the peculiar velocity field in the vicinity of the Great Wall(GW) using a sample of 172 spiral galaxies with reliable IRTF distanceestimates (Dell'Antonio et al. 1996). We examine three main issues: (1)the infall onto the GW, (2) large-scale flow, and (3) shear. We use aMonte Carlo method to remove selection-based biases from the peculiarvelocity sample. For the GW sample, the velocity bias is small (<150km s^-1^). We use the bias-corrected velocities to constrain the infalltowards the Great Wall. We thus have the first limits on the truespatial thickness of this structure. The data are best fit by an infallvelocity <= 150 km s^-1^. The 90% upper limit on the mean infallvelocity is ~500 km s^-1^. Consequently, the upper limit on thereal-space full width of the GW is d<11.2h^-1^ Mpc. Thus, the GreatWall is a thin, two- dimensional structure in real space as well as inredshift space. We calculate the best-fit estimate of the motion of theLocal Group with respect to the galaxy distribution: ν_flow_ ~725+/-400 km s^-1^ towards a 11.7 +/- 1.5 hr, δ =36.8deg^+/-55^deg^. Because our δ constraints are quiteweak, this flow is consistent with the CMB dipole (Smoot et al. 1992)and with the flow vector of Riess et al. (1995). The data are alsoconsistent at the 25% confidence level with the direction of large-scaleflow reported by Lauer & Postman (1994). We calculate theimprovement in sensitivity expected for a sample extending over the fulldeclination range of the GW. We also calculate the shear across theright ascension range of the GW. The GW region is quiet: the detectedthe shear across the range of the GW is -70+/-210 km s^-1^. The absenceof large shear constrains the amplitude of large-scale densityfluctuations (Feldman & Watkins 1995).

1.65μm (H-band) surface photometry of galaxies. II. Observations of 297 galaxies with the TIRGO 1.5m telescope.
We present near-infrared H-band (1.65μm) surface photometry of 297galaxies (mostly) in the Coma Supercluster obtained with the ArcetriNICMOS3 camera, ARNICA, mounted on the Gornergrat Infrared Telescope.Magnitudes and diameters within the 21.5mag/arcsec^2^ isophote,concentration indices, and total H magnitudes are derived. Combiningthese observations with those obtained similarly using the Calar Altotelescopes (Paper I, 1996A&AS..120..489G) we find a strong positivecorrelation between the near-infrared concentration index and the galaxyH-band luminosity, and we analyze the consequent dependence ofnear-infrared growth-curves on H-band luminosity.

Automated surface photometry for the Coma Cluster galaxies: The catalog
A homogeneous photometry catalog is presented for 450 galaxies withB25.5 less than or equal to 16 mag located in the 9.8 deg x9.8 deg region centered on the Coma Cluster. The catalog is based onphotographic photometry using an automated surface photometry softwarefor data reduction applied to B-band Schmidt plates. The catalogprovides accurate positions, isophotal and total magnitudes, major andminor axes, and a few other photometric parameters including rudimentarymorphology (early of late type).

Colors, luminosities, and masses of disk galaxies. 2: Environmental dependenceis
The B-band and near-infrared (H) luminosity functions of spiral galaxiesare derived for the Coma and A1367 clusters and for a referencepopulation of 'field' galaxies in the Coma supercluster. They areconsistent at the bright end, but they differ significantly at the faintend, indicating an overdensity of spirals with blue color (B-H less than3.0) and faint H luminosity (H greater than -21.5) in clusters withrespect to the field. These objects have disturbed morphology andpeculiar velocities significantly larger than the rest of the clustersample. We discuss these results in the framework of a possibleenvironmental dependence of galaxy evolution, and we conclude thatenhanced current star formation in cluster spiral galaxies might occurdue to molecular gas collapse stimulated by the ram-pressure mechanism.

Galaxy Properties at the North Galactic Pole. I. Photometric Properties on Large Spatial Scales
A two-color study of the galaxies detected on POSS-I in a 289 squaredegree region centered on the North Galactic Pole is presented. We use avariety of mapping techniques to characterize the large-scale spatialdistribution of galaxies. The depth and sample size of this new surveyallows, for the first time, the isolation of large photometricsubsamples of galaxies in high- and low-density environments on thescale of superclusters. Our principal finding is a statisticallysignificant difference between the mean photometric properties of thesesubsamples in the sense that galaxies in the high-density Coma andfilament environments have redder colors and larger concentrationindices than galaxies drawn from low-density interfilament regions.These results are in accord with the known morphology-density relation.Thus, appropriately chosen photometric and morphological parameters, inconcert with a galaxy surface density map, can be used to selectstructures from the projected galaxy distribution which correspond toregions of high density. An illustration of this point is our discoveryof a concentration of blue galaxies identified in our maps near the coreof the Coma cluster. This feature is comprised of early-type galaxieswhich exhibit signs of current or recent star formation. These resultsare predicated on relations between morphological type and photometricparameters derived from APS scans of POSS-I. We therefore discuss theimage calibration procedures used to compile our catalog of physicallysignificant photometric parameters. We demonstrate the morphologicaltype dependence among quantities such as mean color and imageconcentration index, and the lack of such a dependence for mean surfacebrightness.

A CCD survey of galaxies. IV. Observations with the 2.1 M telescope at San Pedro Martir.
Continuing a CCD survey of galaxies belonging or projected onto the Comaand Hercules Superclusters, to the A262 and Cancer clusters, we presentisophote maps and photometric profiles in the Johnson system of 111galaxies (67 in the V and B bands, 42 only in V, 2 only in B) obtainedwith the 2.1 m telescope at San Pedro Martir (Baja California, Mexico).

Tests of the Tully-Fisher relation. 1: Scatter in infrared magnitude versus 21 CM width
We examine the precision of the Tully-Fisher relation (TFR) using asample of galaxies in the Coma region of the sky, and find that it isgood to 5% or better in measuring relative distances. Total magnitudesand disk axis ratios are derived from H and I band surface photometry,and Arecibo 21 cm profiles define the rotation speeds of the galaxies.Using 25 galaxies for which the disk inclination and 21 cm width arewell defined, we find an rms deviation of 0.10 mag from a linear TFRwith dI/d(log Wc) = -5.6. Each galaxy is assumed to be at adistance proportional to its redshift, and an extinction correction of1.4(1-b/a) mag is applied to the total I magnitude. The measured scatteris less than 0.15 mag using milder extinction laws from the literature.The I band TFR scatter is consistent with measurement error, and the 95%CL limits on the intrinsic scatter are 0-0.10 mag. The rms scatter usingH band magnitudes is 0.20 mag (N = 17). The low width galaxies havescatter in H significantly in excess of known measurement error, but thehigher width half of the galaxies have scatter consistent withmeasurement error. The H band TFR slope may be as steep as the I bandslope. As the first applications of this tight correlation, we note thefollowing: (1) the data for the particular spirals commonly used todefine the TFR distance to the Coma cluster are inconsistent with beingat a common distance and are in fact in free Hubble expansion, with anupper limit of 300 km/s on the rms peculiar line-of-sight velocity ofthese gas-rich spirals; and (2) the gravitational potential in the disksof these galaxies has typical ellipticity less than 5%. The publisheddata for three nearby spiral galaxies with Cepheid distancedeterminations are inconsistent with our Coma TFR, suggesting that theselocal calibrators are either ill-measured or peculiar relative to theComa Supercluster spirals, or that the TFR has a varying form indifferent locales.

Flat galaxy catalogue
A systematic search for disklike edge-on-galaxies with a diameter largerthan a = 40 arcsec and a major-to-minor axis ratio a/b greater than 7was carried out by means of the Palomar Observatory Sky Survey and theESO/SERC survey. As a result, we present a new catalog of flat galaxies(FGC) containing 4455 objects and covering about 56 percent of the wholesky for the first time. The catalogue is assigned to study large-scalecosmic streamings and other problems of observational cosmology.

Optical identifications of IRAS point sources - The Fornax, Hydra I and Coma clusters
Optical identifications are presented for 66 IRAS point sources in theregion of the Fornax cluster of galaxies, 106 IRAS point sources in theregion of the Hydra I cluster of galaxies (Abell 1060), and 59 IRASpoint sources in the region of the Coma cluster of galaxies (Abell1656). Eight other sources in Hydra I do not have optical counterpartsand are very probably due to IR cirrus. Twenty-three (35 percent) of theFornax sources are associated with stars and 43 (65 percent) withgalaxies; 48 (42 percent) of the Hydra I sources are associated withstars and 58 (51 percent) with galaxies; 18 (31 percent) of the Comasources are associated with stars and 41 (69 percent) with galaxies. Thestellar and infrared cirrus surface density is consistent with thegalactic latitude of each field.

The distance to the Coma cluster using the B-band Tully-Fisher relation
The present estimate of the distance to the Coma cluster on the basis ofthe B-band Tully-Fisher (T-F) relation has conducted photographicsurface photometry on all galaxies for which H I line width data in acircle of 4-deg radius centered on the Coma cluster. A detailed estimateis made of the cluster population incompleteness bias for the distanceestimation. While the correction for sample incompleteness, inconjunction with the T-F relation, increases the distance modulus, theresult cannot be as large as the value indicated by Kraan-Kortweg et al.(1988).

Near-infrared observations of galaxies in the Coma supercluster
Near-IR magnitudes have been obtained for 136 galaxies in the Coma/A1367supercluster region, and near-IR colors (J-H) and (H-K) for 90 and 87objects, respectively. The near-IR colors are contained in a small rangeand do not depend on morphological types, galaxy inclination, orenvironment. Optical-to-IR colors depend strongly on a galaxy'smorphological type and inclination. There is a dependence of therelative excess of radio, and to a lesser degree, of far-IR emission onrecent star formation activity. The magnitude-line width relation forgalaxies in Coma and A1367 obtained with these data has a larger spreadthan previously found with smaller samples. The data suggest a distancemodulus to Coma of about 35, regardless of the choice of primarycalibrators.
