JHK Standard Stars on the CIT Photometric System
We present a set of 58 stars with JHK standard values on the CIT systemand with a suitable magnitude range for use with array detectors onsmall- to moderate-size telescopes. Each final value is based on six to47 measures (with a mean of 17) obtained on separate nights with the USNaval Observatory (USNO) NICMOS3 (HgCdTe) camera. The objects include 20primary CIT standards from Elias et al. and 38 secondary sourcesselected from the SAAO and UKIRT standards lists, cover a K-magnituderange between 6.0 and 10.8, and lie north of declination -20°. Thestars were reduced to the CIT system as defined by Elias et al.,producing a USNO system that is identical to the near-infrared CITsystem. This work densifies the original CIT system by nearly a factorof 3 and extends its range by about 3 mag. The SAAO and UKIRT standardsare also compared with the CIT system.

A new population of brown dwarfs
We report the first results from a survey for low-mass stars and browndwarfs, based on a photographic stack of around 100 Schmidt plates. Thissurvey extends photographic searches by about 2 mag, and covers an areaof 25 sq deg. Some 30 faint objects with large R-I colors were selectedfor further study, and were found to have very strong molecularabsorption in their spectra, but only moderately red infrared colors.Five of these stars were selected for a parallax program; three of thesewere found to be at a distance of around 45 pc, implying a very lowluminosity. On the basis of their luminosity alone it is clear thatthese stars are field brown dwarfs, and we discuss their likelyevolutionary status in the context of current models of low-mass stellarevolution.

First experience in automatic spectral classification related to the MEGA program
The results of automatic quantitative spectral classification of starsin field No. 10 (alpha-1950 = 1 h 18 m, delta-1950 = + 3 deg 13 min) ofthe MEGA program are presented. Some tentative stellar-statisticalresults are discussed.
